For this spring, the Pro Loco Massa Lubrense is offering four guided tours in some of the most fascinating places in the area.
Four Sundays between May and June to travel and discover Massa Lubrense: we do it on foot and with total respect for the places, to get to know them better and touch their essence. Paths and routes, sometimes even off the beaten track, are in fact real mines of treasures of history, traditions and nature.
Here is the program of the Spring Walks:
Sunday 14th May Sirenuse trail Departure: 9 am from the square of Sant’Agata sui due golfi Duration: about 4 hours
The Sirenuse Trail is a scenic circular route that allows you to cross the southern slope of the Sorrento Peninsula enjoying enchanting views: from the Amalfi Coast to the Faraglioni of Capri.
Sunday 28th May Ieranto Bay Departure: 9:00 from the square of Nerano Duration: about 4 hours
The Bay of Ieranto is a rocky inlet between Punta Campanella and Punta Penna. It is the pearl of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area and can only be reached on foot or by canoe.
Sunday 11th June Punta Campanella Departure: 9:00 from the square of Termini Duration: about 4 hours
A pleasant excursion on foot is the only way to reach Punta Campanella, along a path of about an hour on the northern slope of the Promontorium Minervae, which separates the Gulf of Naples from the Gulf of Salerno.
Domenica 11 giugno Crapolla Cove Departure: 9:00 from the square of Sant’Agata sui due golfi Duration: about 4 hours
The Crapolla Cove is one of the most evocative inlets on the coast of Massa Lubrense: in addition to being of great naturalistic interest, it preserves visible traces of a past rich in history.

The cycle of Spring Walks is part of the Omaggio alla bellezza review, and is organized by the Pro Loco Massa Lubrense with the contribution of the Tourism and Events Department of the Municipality of Massa Lubrense.

Great emotion and happiness for the Napoli fans who celebrated the third championship in the team’s history.
In every square and in every street, flags have sprung up from the windows, blue ribbons that go from one balcony to another, banners on the facades of the buildings.
The life-size silhouettes of the players were installed in the gardens of Massa Centro. There is also Spalletti and, of course, Maradona.
The Sorrento coast with its beautiful beaches and crystal clear seas is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Italy. Some of these beaches, however, especially in the territory of Massa Lubrense, remain a jewel admired by few. These are isolated, poorly accessible or difficult to reach beaches that are able to give a dream experience. Let’s discover three of these secret and pristine beaches.
Fiordo di Crapolla
Crapolla can be reached on foot from the hamlet of Torca, through a fascinating but challenging path where 700 stone steps lead to the beach. Every 50 steps there is a ceramic tile indicating the progressive numbering.
Along the path that leads to the inlet there is the small Chapel of Saint Peter, open to all visits, where every 29 June the faithful go on pilgrimage from Torca to celebrate Holy Mass. According to tradition, Saint Peter landed in Crapolla on his journey to Rome to Christianize the Sorrento Peninsula.
The small pebble beach is located in a narrow cove and is protected by a high cliff that keeps it in the shade for most of the day.
Baia di Ieranto
The Bay of Ieranto is located at the end of the Sorrento peninsula, just in front of the faraglioni of Capri. To reach it you start from Nerano, an ancient fishing village. The path is well signposted and starts near the village square. Its final part of the path consists of the “miners’ staircase”, used to reach the small beach overlooking Capri.
The route is quite tiring but the breathtaking view and the tranquility of the landscape, located in the middle of a protected area, repay the effort. During the hours of the day the beach is exposed to the sun without any shelter, so it is advisable to leave equipped. It is ideal for those who love to venture out and enjoy a day at sea, diving into one of the cleanest waters of the peninsula.
Cala di Mitigliano
Another of the hidden beaches of Massa Lubrense is the Cala di Mitigliano , a place of peace and calm characterized by its crystal clear waters. The beach, mainly in rock, is enclosed by high cliffs overlooking the sea. The path branches off from the one to Punta Campanella. It is a bit uncomfortable but not so strenuous, if faced with the right equipment.
The beach is sunny and the sound of waves hurling against the rock makes the atmosphere pleasant and relaxing.
Not only the beach but also the incredible view of the island of Capri are one of the reasons why everyone should visit the fantastic Cala di Mitigliano whose sea, when it is calm, gives the opportunity to snorkel and admire its underwater beauty. The landscape in which the cove is located and its path that runs through plants and shrubs typical of the Mediterranean maquis makes it one of the most beautiful beaches in the territory of Massa Lubrense together with the Bay of Ieranto.
Protected area of Punta Campanella
Among the municipalities to which the blue flag has been reconfirmed, the recognition of the FEE for 2022, there is Massa Lubrense, who got it for 15 consecutive years (2008-2022). This recognition is largely due to the hidden beaches of Massa Lubrense and the quality of their bathing waters. More generally, there is also talk of compliance with the criteria relating to sustainable land management, coastal belt maintenance and service efficiency.

Ecco a voi alcune attività che vi consigliamo in particolar modo:
Yoga: Lo Yoga ha origini antichissime risalenti a migliaia di anni fa in India e si trova a metà strada tra una pura attività fisica e una vera e propria filosofia. Si tratta di un insieme di attività che non solo giovano alla salute fisica ma che mirano anche al raggiungimento di un miglior stato spirituale. Sin dall’antichità molti individui ritengono che sia possibile raggiungere un livello di illuminazione e salvezza spirituale tramite queste pratiche. Esistono vari tipi di Yoga, ognuno con le proprie caratteristiche, come ad esempio lo Sri Sri Yoga.
Pilates: Un metodo di allenamento fisico, ideato da Joseph Pilates agli inizi del 900, che prende vari spunti dallo Yoga. Esperienze religiose uniche
Se siete interessati a conoscere la vita religiosa qui a Massa Lubrense allora vi invitiamo ad assistere alle processioni del Venerdì Santo che avvengono ogni anno.
Si tratta di due processioni eseguite da due organizzazioni:
La processione del Cristo morto, eseguita dall’Arciconfraternita della Morte, volta a rappresentare la passione e morte di Cristo. L’Arciconfraternita nacque nel 1613 con il fine di voler garantire una degna sepoltura a tutti coloro che non potessero permettersela a causa della loro povertà.
Una processione organizzata dalla Confraternita di San Filippo Neri, anch’essa rappresentante la morte di Cristo. La Confraternita fu ufficialmente fondata nel 1575 da Filippo Neri ed è dedita all’utilizzo dell’istruzione e della predicazione per la santificazione delle anime.
Intrattenimento per bambini a Massa Lubrense
Se avete con voi dei bambini e volete che anche loro trovino attività divertenti tutte per loro a cui partecipare allora non temete! Qui a Massa Lubrense troverete vari parchi giochi dove i vostri bambini potranno divertirsi immersi nella natura!
A Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi, una delle nostre frazioni, troverete un parco di recente apertura situato lungo via Reola, aperto dal Lunedì al Venerdì, dalle 9:00 alle 13:00 e dalle 15:00 alle 18:00, e il Sabato e la Domenica dalle 9:00 alle 18:00, sia agli adulti che ai bambini, dove i primi potranno rilassarsi a contatto con la natura mentre gli ultimi si divertono.
Di recente riapertura è il Parco delle Sirene, che adesso presenta una nuova area giochi per i bambini con tanto di nuove misure di sicurezza. Inoltre è stata migliorata l’accessibilità ai disabili per tutte le aree del parco. Il parco è situato a Massa Centro, lungo via Rotabile Massa Turro.
Immergersi nella produzione agricola
Se avete mai desiderato osservare con i vostri occhi come avviene la produzione agricola e la raccolta delle olive, qui a Massa Lubrense potrete averne l’occasione!
Abbiamo molte aziende agricole nel territorio che si occupano della produzione di una miriade di prodotti diversi. Molte di esse tendono a produrre olio tramite la coltivazione di olive.
Generalmente la raccolta delle olive avviene tra i mesi di Ottobre e Dicembre, ed è proprio intorno a questo periodo che ogni anno viene organizzata una “camminata tra gli olivi” da parte dell’Associazione Nazionale Città dell’Olio, che comprende centinaia di città in tutta Italia. Tra queste città è spesso inclusa Massa Lubrense, pertanto vi invitiamo a prenderne parte nell’occasione se desiderate vivere un’esperienza unica a stretto contatto con la realtà agricola locale!
Attività non turistiche per un’esperienza diversa
Ci sono ovviamente molte altre attività non turistiche che potrete provare qui a Massa Lubrense, in quest’articolo vi abbiamo indicato solo alcuni di quelle che, secondo noi, potreste apprezzare di più.

Annunziata’s viewpoint In the picturesque setting of what was once the historic center of Massa Lubrense, there is the Belvedere of the small hamlet of Annunziata. The first step is to enter the village. Once you reach the Church of the Annunciation, you have to go down a short staircase to get to the lookout. At that point, the entire gulf of Naples immediately opens up to your view, from the island of Capri to Mount Vesuvius.
Termini’s lookout Among the panoramic points of Massa Lubrense, the viewpoint of Termini is a meeting point for lovers of the island of Capri. In fact, from the square of Termini you can enjoy the panorama of the crystal clear water interrupted by the evergreen island of Capri. The island seems so close that it almost seems to be able to touch it.
Monastero del Deserto In Sant’Agata sui due golfi there is an exceptional panoramic point. In fact, along a pleasant walk along a tree-lined path you arrive at the Monastero del Deserto, on whose tower you can admire the unforgettable view of the gulfs of Naples and Salerno.
Monte San Costanzo You can reach the pinewood of Monte San Costanzo by car, or you have to take a path from Termini. Which is moderately tiring. However, this effort will be rewarded by the amazing view that the panorama reserves for us, once we arrive at the church of San Costanzo. Among the panoramic points of Massa Lubrense, this is certainly the most suggestive; because from here our gaze is not focused on a single direction but has a 360 ° view at its disposal.
Pennino The last panoramic point in our classification could only be the Pennino. From the top of the terrace, the observer can enjoy the view of the naturalistic spectacle offered by the Gulf of Naples and the island of Capri. In the twilight hours, the surrounding atmosphere is tinged with particular shades, which makes the experience romantic and evocative.

Regardless of the view, the protagonist of Monte San Costanzo is certainly the white church, pictured here from above. Therefore, from the top of the hill you can admire a 360degree view of the Lattari Mountains and the gulfs of Naples and Salerno that embrace the coast.
Firstly from the top of Monte di San Costanzo, we overlook the Bay of Ieranto, an enchanting rocky inlet. Moreover if you take a look from a precise perspective, the bay forms the suggestive shape of a heart.
The Bay of Ieranto is a property protected by the FAI (Italian Environment Fund) and can be reached on foot by a marked path. Starting from Nerano, the journey takes about 40 minutes. Alternatively, the bay can be reached directly from the sea, but only by using a canoe.
This is a photo of Marina del Cantone taken from above. It shows the beauty of the crystalline sea of the Lubrense coast. In the background, you can see the gulf of Salerno, up to Punta Licosa.
In the image above, in the foreground, there is the Montalto Tower. This was completed in 1570 and placed in a strategic position to guard the coast. From the top of it you can admire the Bay of Ieranto and the Bay of Marina del Cantone.
Marina di Puolo is located at the very beginning of the town of Massa Lubrense, coming from Sorrento. In summer, some of the local restaurants have their tables directly on the beach, giving customers a unique experience.
In this photo we can see the Marciano bridge, it is fascinating because it’s one of the most panoramic points of Massa Lubrense. In particular, walking on it you can admire the island of Capri in the Gulf of Naples.
In conclusion, in this last photo, there is part of the Sirenuse path, which is a trekking path between Sant’Agata sui due Golfi and Colli di Fontanelle. It is called this way because during the walk you can see in the background the islets of Li Galli, also called Sirenuse.

Il territorio di Massa Lubrense è costellato di torri di guardia costiere, le cosiddette “torri saracene”. Sono la testimonianza di un sistema di avvistamento e difesa volto a proteggere la popolazione dalle incursioni dei corsari.
Storia
Le torri di guardia sul territorio di Massa Lubrense furono edificate in diversi periodi: durante il periodo Longobardo-Normanno (IX secolo), sotto gli Angioini (1266 -1442) che furono i primi a ideare un vero e proprio sistema difensivo, e con gli Aragonesi (1442 -1503) che continuarono l’opera.
I pirati saraceni cominciarono ad attaccare le nostre coste durante il IX secolo. Con ferocia inaudita, saccheggiavano e distruggevano i villaggi, rapivano uomini, donne e bambini per venderli come schiavi.
Nel 1500 le incursioni dei pirati saraceni, barbareschi e turchi si fecero più frequenti. Oltre ad attaccare le navi mercantili nel mar Mediterraneo, i corsari sbarcavano sulle spiagge e si spingevano verso l’interno per cercare villaggi da razziare e cristiani da catturare.
Tra le incursioni più cruente avvenute in Penisola Sorrentina e Costiera Amalfitana ricordiamo: l’attacco subito da Cetara (1534), la strage di Conca dei Marini (1543), l’invasione turca a Massa Lubrense e Sorrento (1558), l’invasione turca a Vietri (1587).
Fu così che le fortificazioni costiere si fecero sempre più necessarie. Infatti, è nel periodo del vicereame spagnolo che si edificò la maggior parte delle torri ancora oggi esistenti. Nel 1563 Don Parfan de Ribera Duca d’Alcalà emanò un editto che impose la costruzione di torri costiere presidiate da militari su tutte le coste del Regno di Napoli.
Tuttavia, il grande progetto non fu mai completato, sia per mancanza di fondi che per il sopraggiungere della battaglia di Lepanto, che sottrasse numerose galee alla flotta turca. Le torri persero via via la loro importanza strategica e vennero utilizzate per altri scopi.

Caratteristiche
Le torri di epoca angioina erano a pianta cilindrica, alte, dalla muratura non molto spessa e avevano principalmente una funzione di guardia. Servivano a segnalare l’arrivo dei pirati con fuochi o tramite segnali di fumo, in questo modo si avvertiva la popolazione di cercare riparo nei boschi, nelle grotte o nelle fortificazioni.
Con l’intensificarsi degli attacchi, si vide necessario rendere le torri più resistenti e massicce; si preferì la pianta quadrata, con uno spessore della muratura maggiore sul lato esterno. A una prima serie di torri di vedetta, si sostituirono a poco a poco torri di difesa, armate con cannoni e presidiate da un corpo di guardia comandato dal torriere.
Il sistema difensivo prevedeva che ogni torre fosse costruita in posizione tale da essere visibile da quella più vicina, in modo che le segnalazioni di pericolo potessero essere più efficaci e veloci.
A segnare il passaggio da una forma all’altra fu l’introduzione dell’artiglieria, che rese indispensabile il cambiamento di tali fortificazioni. L’artiglieria era posta sulla piazza e non all’interno della torre, poiché i gas e i fumi sprigionati dalle armi avrebbero danneggiato le stesse per la mancanza di saturazione. La torre quadrata risultava più funzionale rispetto a quella cilindrica anche perché consentiva di poter contenere più armi.

Cosa ne rimane?
Di queste antiche strutture difensive, in penisola sorrentina sopravvivono numerose testimonianze. Alcune non sono altro che ruderi, a causa della mancanza di manutenzione, mentre altre, sottoposte a interventi di recupero, sono state adattate agli usi più disparati.
Le torri principali
Sono nove le torri che ancora esistono lungo le coste di Massa Lubrense. Lungo il versante napoletano della costa massese ci sono quelle di Capo Massa, Capo Corbo, San Lorenzo, Fossa di Papa e Minerva. Le altre, Montalto, Nerano, Recommone e Crapolla, sono invece sul versante salernitano.
Massa Lubrense è ricca anche di strutture di difesa interne, costruite sulla fascia collinare. Ne sono un esempio il “Torrione”, struttura edificata per difendere l’ex collegio gesuitico, e le case-torri, erette prevalentemente da privati. La popolazione utilizzò le torri anche dopo le incursioni saracene: Torre Turbolo, al borgo dell’Annunziata, nel Seicento fu sede del Monte dei Pegni; la Torre Ghezi, presso Sant’Agata sui due Golfi, servì come rifugio durante la seconda guerra mondiale.
