Saint Anthony of Padua in Marina del Cantone

Every year on June 13th, the beautiful bay of Marina del Cantone comes alive with devotion and festivity for the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua. It’s an unmissable event where religious tradition, maritime heritage, and local culture come together in a unique celebration.

Religious roots

Saint Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon in 1195. He was a Franciscan priest, theologian, and preacher.He is venerated as the Saint of Miracles and is considered as the protector of travelers and families. Although he was Portuguese by birth, he is known worldwide as “of Padua” because he spent most of his life in Italy and died near the city of Padua in 1231. His remains rest in the basilica of Padua, which was built shortly after his death. Saint Anthony is often depicted with a lily—symbolizing purity—and the Child Jesus in his arms.

Marina del Cantone in full festive spirit

The feast reflects the deep devotion of the local community to their patron saint, whose veneration is tied to the village church built in 1646 and dedicated to the saint. The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua is located on the eastern end of Marina del Cantone’s beach. Overlooking the sea, the small chapel features an artistic tiled floor and a baroque altar. Religious celebrations begin with the novena, during which the faithful attend daily Mass and decorate the church with flowers and candles.

On the day of the feast, in the afternoon, takes place the traditional boat race. Local “gozzi” (typical wooden boats of the Sorrento Coast) compete, and in recent years, the event has expanded to include pedal boat and canoe races as well.

One of the most anticipated moments is the sea procession at sunset. The vessel, adorned with flowers, ribbons, and small flags, is followed by a fleet of fishing boats. This ritual, blending the sacred with the maritime tradition, symbolizes the saint’s protection over sailors and the entire community.
The procession ends on the beach, where the Eucharistic Celebration in honor of the saint is held.

In addition to its religious aspect, the feast is also a time for conviviality and local traditions. The narrow streets leading to the beach come alive with market stalls and live music, creating a warm and lively atmosphere. Local families and visitors can enjoy traditional dishes such as spaghetti alla Nerano or fresh seafood specialties. The celebration ends with a fireworks display over the sea.
