Outdoor activities in Massa Lubrense

Massa Lubrense is a destination that enchants visitors with the chance to enjoy sport in close contact with nature. In recent years, this area has become a true landmark for outdoor enthusiasts: climbing, biking, and trail running find here an ideal setting.

Climbing in Massa Lubrense

The cliff of Punta Campanella is a perfect destination for climbing. Located between the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast, it features bolted routes reaching a maximum height of about 90 meters. Some are suitable for beginners, while others are more challenging for experienced climbers. The cliff is divided into several sectors, including “Settore Minerva” and “Paretone,” offering routes of varying difficulty. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to climb, but the site can be enjoyed all year round. The cliff overlooks the deep-blue sea of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area and offers breathtaking views of Capri and the Gulf of Naples.

In order to reach the cliff it’s necessary to follow a trail starting from Termini and descending toward the coast. The path is not particularly steep and is suitable even for those who are not expert hikers. Near the end of the trail, it’s possible to admire the remains of the Tower of Minerva. It’s a watchtower, built in the 14th century by Roberto D’Angiò, King of Naples, to defend the area from Saracen attacks.

Biking among hills, trails, and the sea

Thanks to its hilly landscape, Massa Lubrense offers unique experiences for both road cyclists and mountain bike enthusiasts. One of the most popular routes among outdoor lovers starts from the center of Massa and passes through the hamlets of Termini, Nerano, and Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi. For mountain biking, ideal trails are those which connect Monte San Costanzo, the Punta Campanella promontory, and the Bay of Ieranto.

Several local operators organize guided tours, such as food and wine tours that combine cycling with a stop at farmhouse for tastings. Other options include sunset bike rides for a more relaxed experience

Outdoor running

Running is one of the best ways to experience the natural beauty around Massa Lubrense. Some of the most known trail running routes are:

  • Fiordo di Crapolla: It is a natural inlet located between Recommone and Punta Taschiero. The first part of the walk follows the route of an ancient mule track, after which there is a staircase of 700 steps leading down to Crapolla beach.
  • Monte San Costanzo: is the highest hill in the municipality of Massa Lubrense. The walk starts in the main square of Termini and leads to the top, where it’s possible to admire the remains of a white hermitage founded in the late 16th century by local families.
  • Sentiero delle Sirenuse: connects Torca to Colli di San Pietro, crossing panoramic ridges with spectacular views of the two gulfs of Naples and Salerno. The route takes its name from the legendary mermaids who, according to mythology, inhabited the islets of Li Galli, clearly visible along the route.

Other outdoor activities

Among the other outdoor activities to do in Massa Lubrense we can add kayak excursions, boat tours, yoga lessons and diving. As for kayak excursions, a place that fascinates is called Bagni della Regina Giovanna. It’s a natural pool in Sorrento and it owes its name to the queen of Naples, Giovanna D’Angiò. It seems that the queen frequented the Sorrento coasts and in particular this pleasant place with her lovers.
