Sea turtles off the coast of Massa Lubrense
In the crystal waters of Massa Lubrense, sea turtle sightings are becoming increasingly frequent. These fascinating creatures are true symbols of the Mediterranean. Each encounter offers a unique opportunity to learn about and show respect for these extraordinary animals.
A home in the Mediterranean: sea turtles in the Gulf of Naples
The Caretta caretta, better known as the loggerhead sea turtle, embarks on long migrations that span thousands of kilometers every year. The Gulf of Naples is one of their vital stopovers — and, in some cases, a safe haven for nesting. Its quiet beaches, mild waters, and abundance of prey such as jellyfish and small crustaceans make this area particularly favorable. In recent years, thanks to monitoring efforts carried out by environmental organizations and rescue centers, reports of sea turtle sightings have increased — both offshore and along the coastline of Massa Lubrense.

Sea turtle rescue
Many turtle rescues are made possible thanks to the valuable cooperation of local fishermen, who promptly report animals in distress. The staff of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area respond quickly, activating recovery and first-aid procedures.
Many specimens are found injured by fishing hooks or entangled in nets — critical situations that highlight how essential collaboration between fishermen, rescue centers, and institutions is to effectively protect marine wildlife.
Rescue and release
Once recovered, the turtles are taken to the first-aid center, where they receive specialized care from biologists and veterinarians. After rehabilitation, they are released back into the open sea, often equipped with a satellite transmitter that allows scientists to track their movements and gather valuable data for research and conservation.
These releases often take place in the presence of students and local residents, becoming powerful moments of community engagement and awareness about marine wildlife protection.
The Role of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area
The Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area plays a crucial role in sea turtle conservation. It monitors nesting sites, promotes environmental education, and intervenes in emergencies. A major step forward was the opening of the “Tartarù”, Sea Turtle First Aid Center in Massa Lubrense, which has been operating since 2024
How to behave during a sighting
- Keep your distance: observe the animal from at least 5 meters away to avoid disturbing it.
- Avoid artificial lights: turn off torches, flashes, and phone lights so as not to disorient the turtle.
- Do not touch the animal: avoid lifting or handling it; physical contact can cause stress or injury.
- Report the sighting: immediately contact the Harbour Office or the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area.
