Massa Lubrense, a recycling municipality: a model of environmental sustainability

In an era where environmental sustainability is a global challenge, Massa Lubrense stands out as a virtuous model of collective commitment and good practices. Since 2009, the municipality has annually received the prestigious “Comune Riciclone” award from Legambiente Campania, establishing itself among Italy’s top performers in waste management.

A success built together

The award is not just a recognition of the municipal administration’s efforts, but the result of collaboration between institutions, citizens, sanitation workers, and schools. Over the past 15 years, Massa Lubrense has consistently exceeded 65% in separate waste collection, reaching 77.4% in 2024. What is particularly impressive is the quality of the service: punctual collection, reduction of waste, and constant attention to the cleanliness of the territory.

How separate waste collection works in Massa Lubrense

In Massa Lubrense, waste collection is organized as a “door-to-door” service, with specific days and times assigned to each type of waste:

  • Organic waste (kitchen scraps)
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastic and metals
  • Glass
  • Non-recyclable waste (only items that cannot be recycled)

Each type of waste must be correctly sorted at home using the appropriate bags: plastic, glass, and non-recyclable bags must be transparent to allow verification of the contents, while organic waste must be placed in biodegradable bags. In 2024, paper bags replaced plastic ones for paper collection, improving the quality of the collected material. Bags must be securely closed and placed outside homes according to the weekly calendar provided by the municipality and the managing body, Penisolaverde.

Additionally, a bulky waste collection service is available by appointment, and mobile ecological stations are set up in various locations across the territory for the disposal of special waste.

Good practices that make a difference

Among the most innovative initiatives is the home composting program promoted by the municipality in collaboration with Penisolaverde. Citizens who participate receive a compost bin on free loan and commit to managing their organic waste independently, without sending it into the public collection system. In return, they can benefit from discounts on the TARI (waste tax), verified annually.

A commitment to sustainability

Being recognized as a “Comune Riciclone” is not just about receiving an award—it’s about fostering a culture of sustainability day by day. In a territory rich in natural beauty, culture, and biodiversity, every small action counts: properly separating waste, following the collection calendar, and avoiding the abandonment of materials.

This commitment involves everyone: residents, students, tourism operators, and visitors alike. Choosing Massa Lubrense means contributing through daily actions to the preservation of a unique heritage. Protecting the environment is, ultimately, about safeguarding the beauty, identity, and future of this remarkable territory.
