Free pilates lessons at the Castle of Annunziata
Also this year the cycle of meetings “Pilates al Castello” is held in Massa Lubrense: 6 free lessons of pilates, at sunset, at the Aragonese Castle of Annunziata.
In this regard, we were pleased to interview the instructor and physiotherapist Carla Marciano.
Interview with Carla Marciano
Dr. Marciano, first of all, we would like to ask you what is the discipline of Pilates?
Pilates is a method of global physical exercise, which takes its name from its creator Joseph Pilates. It developed in the twentieth century combining its guiding principles to each exercise gradually performed over time, with the primary objective of a healthy mind in a healthy body. Pilates includes progressive and proprioceptive exercises in different positions: from the supine to the lateral decubitus up to the quadrupedic position and then on your feet. It works with the use of various supports (cushions, thicknesses) to loosen all tensions and guide each proposed position.
In what pilates is similar to or differs from yoga?
Yoga and pilates are two different disciplines regarding their origin and the type of training proposed, but Joseph Pilates practiced yoga and martial arts and tried to take inspiration from these disciplines that although different in the exercise are similar in principles. These include concentration, relaxation, the precision of movement, coordination, balance, strength, flexibility, and – primary and essential and not at all obvious – breathing.
What are the benefits of this discipline?
The main benefits are:
- Perception and knowledge of your body changing;
- Prevention of osteoarticular problems and pains;
- Prevention of problems related to the pelvic floor;
- Improvement of respiratory capacity;
- Reinforcement of the whole body with the maintenance of a correct position;
- Benefit on the circulation;
- More mobility and less rigidity;
- Promotion of a general state of well-being.

Pilates is often associated with the prevention or treatment of back pain. Does it really work?
In the prevention of back pain, pilates has brought much positive feedback, documented by numerous studies done on different types of people. On the other hand, with regard to the treatment of back pain, Pilates can be considered a method of support to be proposed following a specific therapeutic path, but not always and not in all cases. Obviously for the back can be suggested an individual and adapted path.
Can Pilates be practiced by everyone?
Pilates defined as therapeutic and guided by a trained instructor can be practiced and adapted to everyone in its basic exercises: from the child to the elderly, from healthy to a pathological conditions. However, we talk about adapted and simple exercises, an advanced training form is not suitable for everyone. Obviously, before starting pilates lessons you communicate personally with those who made the request.
The cycle of meetings that are held at the Aragonese Castle of the Annunziata has just begun. Does the place you are in somehow affect the exercise?
Yes, I believe that the chosen and sought place greatly favors the already appointed principles of pilates, especially relaxation and concentration. All this is thanks to the natural noises, to the contact with what is simple but so essential, in a place where the sky and the history of Massa Lubrense blend in a perfect union with an incomparable panorama.
