Among sirens and sunsets: in the heart of Termini

Category:Blog,Places,Pro Loco,Travel Tags :

The village of Termini, with a fascinating past, goes from being a Greek colony to a tourist destination.

Today it is one of the most popular destinations for travelers looking for a relaxing holiday, among enchanting places that can be explored especially via hiking itineraries.

Termini constitutes the western end of the Sorrento peninsula, a thin strip of mountainous land that juts westward into the sea. This place is steeped in myths and legends linked to the sea and the mountains, with cultivated terraces, citrus groves and olive groves overlooking the splendid blue. The wild cliffs fall into the sea animated by the currents that intertwine at Punta Campanella, right in front of the island of Capri.

The Church of Santa Croce

An example of a place of worship in Termini is the Church of Santa Croce. It that dates back to ancient times, testifying to the religious history of the area. This church, dedicated to the Holy Cross, stands soberly in the village square and represents an important spiritual point of reference for the local community.

Monte San Costanzo in Termini

Just before the limestone peninsula plunges into the blue waters, stands Monte San Costanzo, the highest peak in Massa Lubrense. The hill rises approximately 500 meters above sea level and boasts absolutely breathtaking landscapes on each side: on the Bay of Ieranto, on the cove of Mitigliano, on the gulf of Naples and that of Salerno, and on the island of Capri.

The path that leads to Monte San Costanzo starts right in the heart of Termini, in Piazza Santa Croce. It is also part of the longer Athena Trail.

On the highest point of the promontory stands the Chapel of San Costanzo. It is a small church dating back to the second half of the 16th century which gives to the surrounding area an almost mystical atmosphere. For most of the time the church is closed to the public, but every year on May 14 hundreds of faithful gather for the procession towards Monte San Costanzo, where the Holy Mass is celebrated in honor of the Saint.

Cappella di San Costanzo a Termini
La Cappella di San Costanzo

Punta Campanella

Punta Campanella is the end of the peninsula, facing Capri and dividing the Gulf of Naples from that of Salerno. It can be reached on foot via a path of about three kilometers that starts from the Termini square. Along the way it is possible to see elements that tell stories of past eras, such as the remains of a Roman villa and two of the defensive watchtowers that stand along the Lubrense coast.

The shows of the Limoni in festa 2023

Category:Blog,Events,Festivals,Food,Places,Pro Loco Tags :

To cheer the 47th edition of the now traditional Limoni in festa this year there will be the Neapolitan musical group Foja and the comedian Paolo Caiazzo.

At Largo Vescovado Saturday, July 8, in addition to the opening of the stands of typical specialties, local crafts and a tasting path whose protagonist is the lemon, to animate the night there will be Foja.

The Italian folk-rock band born in Naples will perform in the concert “Miracles and Revolutions”, their fourth album.

The collaborations and successes of the band

They collaborated with Clementino, Enzo Gragnaniello, Lorenzo Hengeller, Alejandro Romero, Davide Toffolo and Alessio Sollo.

Twelve years of music, three albums, live and performance of all kinds; we remember their famous review of “Yes I Know My Way” by Pino Daniele on the occasion of the award ceremony to the “God of Naples” Maradona.

Their music is made of tradition, rock and songwriting, aiming at language mergers and Latin sounds, but never forget the Neapolitan tradition.

So “Miracoli e Rivoluzioni” is a concert/show with two acts in which the Foja deal with issues related to the sentimental sphere and existential and social issues mixing tradition and musical modernity.

They have traveled around Italy for years treading prestigious stages always sold-out as that of the Royal Theatre of Saint Charles, the Arena Flegrea.

The group also performed in the courtyard of the Royal Palace of Capodimonte, the Royal Palace and Castel Sant’Elmo in Naples in front of an audience of over six thousand people.

They got the nomination for the best original song both to David di Donatello and Nastri d’Argento.

So do not miss their performance that will animate the evening of July 8 at 21.00 at the Limoni in festa in Massa Lubrense.

On July 9, instead, at 21.00 at the Limoni in festa will be the turn of the comedian Paolo Caiazzo, one of the leading comedians and author of the Rai 2 comedy show, Made in Sud.

The television and theatre successes of Paolo Caiazzo

Paolo conceived very well-known characters, for example the Japanese man ‘Ndò, Max Playstation and Tonino Cardamone.

Moreover he has been featured on television shows like Quelli che il calcio, Bulldozer, Zelig Off and Colorado Cafè Live.

He is author and performer of successful plays, including Benvenuti in casa Esposito, co-written with Pino Imperatore and Alessandro Siani. He also received the Massimo Troisi Lifetime Achievement Award.

With his pungent irony, brilliance and charisma, Caiazzo always manages to conquer the audience.

His immense talent and his ability to create unique and unforgettable characters made him an icon of contemporary comedy.

On this occasion Paolo Caiazzo will perform the show “Eppure sorrido”.

It is characterized by sketches and monologues whose protagonists are the characters that the actor spread on the social networks during the lockdown.

So impossible not to take a look at the program and miss the performance of these great performers.

The yoga and pilates lessons in Massa Lubrense are free and open to all: practitioners, novices, teachers, the curious, to make room for insights and new experiences and create an opportunity for meeting, exchanging and comparing.

Thanks to the availability of qualified and specialized instructors, we offer four cycles of different yoga and pilates disciplines:

  • Vinyasa yoga at dawn, on Monte San Costanzo, with the instructor and teacher trainer Silvia Daliana
  • Hatha yoga at sunset, in the square of the Church of Marciano, with the osteopath Antonino Minervino
  • Pilates at the Annunziata Castle, with the physiotherapist Carla Marciano
  • Sri sri yoga at the Annunziata Castle, with the instructor Gelsomina Di Maio

We are convinced that the practice of these disciplines can change our lives for the better, through the exploration of the relationship between mind and body and between human beings and their context.

Indeed, if yoga is trying to be one with the universe, practicing it in the open air favors the feeling of union with nature, to reconnect to the Earth and to one’s self in a more profound way.

Trekking: 10 tips for beginners

Category:Blog,Outdoors,Pro Loco,Travel Tags :

by Angela della Ventura

Interview with Michele Palomba

Trekking is certainly one of the best sports you can practice in Massa Lubrense. It is not uncommon to find people that, although wishing to take on trekking, always postpone it, because they do not know where to start. This is exactly why we interviewed an expert in this field, Michele Palomba, who gave us 10 useful tips to help you enjoy this wonderful activity.

1. Things you should always carry

Contrary to popular belief, there is no need to carry many things, which are often bulky. You just need a few essentials, which can easily be stowed in a small backpack, as walking with both hands free will help improve balance and tackle steep trails. The essentials are:

  • a water bottle or canteen;
  • some snacks;
  • sunglasses;
  • cap or hat to protect yourself from sun rays:
  • change of dry clothes, in case you get wet due to bad weather or need to change after sweating too much (socks are utterly important);
  • warm outfit;
  • raincoat;
  • headlamp, which is particularly useful in wintertime, as the sun sets early;
  • fully charged phone;
  • small first aid kit;
  • pair of trekking poles.

2. Things to include in your first aid kit

kit pronto soccorso

First of all, it is very important to always carry any type of prescribed drug with you; if you have allergies, always include antihistamines. Never give anyone the medications you have been prescribed, especially if that person has never taken that type of medication before. This is always good practice, but it is especially important when hiking.
In the actual first aid kit, which should be stored in an airtight bag, you should include a small number of things, which can still help you treat any minor injuries you may suffer while trekking:

  • plasters of different sizes used to treat abrasions;
  • antiseptic, which must explicitly be of the type that can be used on damaged skin;
  • gauzes and medical tape;
  • Tweezers, which can help you to pull out splinters from wounds;

You may of course include other types of medical devices, but you should only do so if you’re qualified enough to use them.

3. Suitable clothing

A simple but very useful advice is to dress with layered clothing using clothes that aren’t particularly warm or heavy when worn on their own, but, at the same time, when worn layered can give you comfort while trekking.
Starting from the innermost layer, depending on season, you should either wear a t-shirt or a thermal long-sleeved shirt; continuing on, fleece clothing can always be useful to protect both from wind and unexpected cold in the shaded areas. Always depending on season, another layer can consist of either a duvet in winter or an anorak during spring or summer, which you can easily put on or take off as needed.
Speaking of fabrics, it is best to avoid denim and plush fabric, because they take a lot of time to dry out in case you get wet when crossing a brook or due to unexpected rain. Breathable fabrics, on the other hand, are highly recommended, being fresh, durable, with quick drying properties. They are suitable for any type of sport.

4. Suitable shoes

Good shoes are essential for any type of hiking, even though many underestimate their importance.
It is crucial to always wear shoes that are suitable for this kind of activity, even when walking on seemingly easy trails, because shoes will always help you walk better.
New shoes may feel hard at first, but their hardness is intentional, as it helps sustaining your body while walking; sneakers or other common types of shoes, on the other hand, are too weak and do not provide good balance, even if they might feel more comfortable at first.
Hiking shoes also feature a sculpted sole, which allows for good grip on any type of terrain.
An useful advice, especially for beginners, is to use high boots, even if they might seem useless or overly expensive; these boots are specifically designed to protect the wearer against injury, as they sustain your ankle better than low boots do, by wrapping perfectly around it.

5. How to pick a path to suit your needs

There are several ways to pick a path that will suit your needs: you can either rely on printed guides or on guides available on the internet. You can also consider asking someone who is more experienced, such as a friend, a qualified guide or the local tourist office. One should avoid relying on websites where any user can upload tracks, since you won’t be able to judge trail conditions and the amount of experience needed to take a given path. Another tip would be not to follow the crowd, avoiding to pick a path only because, according to others, it is easier or just because many people pick it.

6. How to prepare

Hiking in Massa Lubrense

Taking a basic trekking course can be really useful to become familiar with technical terms, to learn how to judge properly the type of terrain you will walk on and its elevation gain; this will in turn allow you to pick a path that, whille offering great landscapes, will still match your physical abilities. This is crucial, as it will guarantee that an otherwise wonderful experience doesn’t turn into something unpleasant.
Speaking of physical preparation, beginners can take walks to train their body to cross steep terrain, but those who cannot exercise daily could simply start using the stairs instead of the lift anytime they can.

7. How to reliably check the weather forecast

Weather is an higly discussed topic and not an easy one to cover. The plethora of smartphone apps are a good way to get an overview of the situation. On the other hand, always keep in mind that in the open air, and especially in the mountains, weather can and will change suddenly and unexpectedely. On mountain peaks it is highly likely for individual thunderstorms to occur, and this is impossible to predict.
Trekking in the rain isn’t necessarily unpleasant, though, even if it might seem scary at first; with all the necessary precautions it can be an unique and suggestive experience.

8. How to trek with children

Hiking in contact with nature is great for children too. In this case, as can be expected, one should exercise caution, especially with lively and curious children. A good tip is to prefer spring or summer time, when weather will usually be mild, but you should also pick easy, well shaded trails to avoid fatigue, injuries or heat strokes. You can turn hiking into a game, where children will feel like they are little explorers. This will surely make them prone to repeat the experience and, hopefully,  teach them to love nature and hiking

9. Where to find adventure companions

Hikes organised by qualified guides are the best way to begin if you’re alone, since you’re sure to receive good tips on choosing equipment and on picking paths. Hikes organised by local tourist offices are also very useful to get acquainted with other people experienced in trekking. Tourist hikes are often designed to provide knowledge of the area, or sometimes to explore an area: because of this they are usually easy to undertake, but exciting nonetheless.

10. Tips about blogs or hiking webpages

Blog

Michele’s webpage, “hikeandseek“, will help you to fully immerse in the world of hiking. Following local webpages based on the area you want to go for a hike in will also help: this includes the website of the municipality and that of the local tourist office. One can often find webpages specific to a certain mountain range or area: these can be relied upon to get updated information about trail conditions. Rockslides and areas with high vegetation are also usually reported.

So, as we have seen, trekking is a sport for everyone, young and old, experts or beginners, enjoyable and, above all, healthy.

Are you ready to go for a hike with us along Massa Lubrense’s best trails?

An experience of Sri Sri yoga in Massa Lubrense

Category:Outdoors,Blog,Events,Pro Loco Tags :

Edited by Claudia Pia Palumbo

Interview with Gelsomina Di Maio

Some call it sport, others religion or philosophy of life: we are talking about yoga. A practice born more than 2000 years ago in India to establish a balance between body and mind and which, during all these years, has never gone out of fashion. On the contrary, it has known more and more new forms, such as Sri Sri Yoga.

In view of the cycle of Sri Sri Yoga lessons that will be held this summer at the Annunziata castle, we asked the instructor Gelsomina di Maio for some information on Sri Sri Yoga.

Could you briefly describe what Sri Sri Yoga consists of? And above all, how does it differ from traditional yoga?

Actually, Sri Sri Yoga does not differ at all from the yogic tradition but is a faithful expression of it, indeed the SSY integrates the various traditional paths such as Hatha Yoga (effort), Jnana Yoga (wisdom), Karma Yoga (service and action) and Bakti Yoga (devotion). The founder of SSY is Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a living master, accomplished in yoga and meditation, peace ambassador, and humanitarian leader known and appreciated all over the world. The goal is to bring into the world an authentic education of yoga accessible to all. His message is that inner and outer peace is possible through service and the awakening of human values. The word yoga means “union”, the one between the body, mind, and breath.

Why is yoga called a “complete” discipline, which provides significant benefits for both the body and the mind?

Yoga is undoubtedly a very complete discipline. Numerous scientific studies demonstrate the therapeutic power of yogic practices. With yoga, we work on the body through postures or positions called “ASANA“. Through certain breathing practices “PRANAYAMA” and meditation “DHYANA“, we work on our vital energy until we reach a deep meditative state called “SAMADHI“.

The benefits of yoga are immense: On a physical level, there is an improvement in elasticity and muscle tone and in all the joints of the body. It improves blood and lymphatic circulation, gives better balance and coordination, increases breathing capacity, and helps reduce body weight. Mentally, it reduces stress, improves concentration and memory, and calms anxiety and mental agitation. Not least, it helps improve sleep quality and quality of life.

 Why precisely the Annunziata castle? Is the environment a determining factor when practicing Sri Sri Yoga?

Having the opportunity to take advantage of a place of such scenic beauty certainly enriches the yoga experience. This magnificent and harmonious place, far from the chaos of the city, where you can breathe fresh air deeply, is certainly an ideal setting for a positive and regenerating experience. The environment in which Yoga is practiced must be clean, tidy, cared for, possibly quiet and well ventilated.

Do you think SSY is for everyone? And above all, is there a specific age to start practicing SSY? Is yoga recommended for pregnant women?

On so many occasions, especially in modern times, yoga is distorted and praticed inappropriately, neglecting the most sacred and profound aspects of this millenary practice. In SSY, wisdom and techniques are proposed in an easy and joyful way, in a simple but effective way. It can therefore be within everyone’s reach and practiced at all ages. The principles of yoga can be taught from an early age, obviously, the teaching methodology and the type of practices change if we are dealing with children. Similarly in the case of pregnant women: yoga is highly recommended but you must be very careful especially in the first three months of pregnancy during which any too stimulating activity is often not recommended. During pregnancy, there are certain postures that are extremely beneficial. Proper breathing along with the well-being and deep relaxation experienced by the mother also benefits the baby in her womb.

 What advice would you give to a person who has never tried yoga until now but really wants to do it?

Not to hesitate any further and take this opportunity immediately. I would recommend giving oneself this possibility without judging themselves, without thinking a priori of being more or less capable. I would suggest experimenting and getting involved. It is never too late to make a change in one’s life and it is never too late to live fully.

We, therefore, thank the instructor Gelsomina di Maio for answering some questions, and now all that remains is to try the free lessons organized by the Pro loco of Massa Lubrense to enjoy the countless advantages that Sri Sri Yoga provides.

Hiking: 10 reasons to choose Massa Lubrense

Category:Blog,Featured,Places,Outdoors,Pro Loco Tags :

Over 100 kilometers of marked trails, incredibly colorful landscapes, hidden coves and ancient alleys among the villages are some of the reasons why Massa Lubrense is the perfect place to walk.

Here are 10 reasons why you absolutely must visit it if you love hiking in nature.

Lace up your shoes and start your adventure!

A trail network over 100 kilometers long

The network allows you to choose short routes limited to a small area or combine multiple trails to cover longer distances. The indications about the difference in height and the type of soil help to understand the level of difficulty of each itinerary: there are all types, suitable for the more experienced or even for children.

Mild temperatures

Southern Italy is known for its sunshine and good weather, which allows for year-round hiking. Spring and autumn are the best seasons. In summer, temperatures are milder in the evening or early in the morning. In winter, it is best to avoid days when rain makes the ground slippery.

Breathtaking landscapes are guaranteed

Massa Lubrense has the privilege of an enviable geographical position, offering the opportunity to enjoy spectacular panoramic views in natural environments. You can discover them during a day of hiking on the promontory of Punta Campanella, along the Sirenuse Trail with a view of the two gulfs of Naples and Salerno, descending the 700 steps that lead to the Crapolla Fiord, reaching the top of Monte San Costanzo

A protected nature

The entire stretch of coast of Massa Lubrense and the sea in front of it, are protected by the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area. In addition to the recognition of the Blue Flag for its beaches, the Municipality has received for years that of the Spighe Verdi, for the enhancement of the rural heritage, with a view to more sustainable development.

Ancient mule tracks and “middle ways” converted into paths

What once were the connecting roads between the villages, or the paths traveled by mules to transport the crops from the fields to the inhabited centers, are now part of the hiking path network and allow us to walk in nature, away from the noise of the road.

Hiking, history and archeology

Combining nature, culture and history in Massa Lubrense is very simple. The Museo Diffuso project suggests thematic itineraries to combine the landscape with the traces of history it preserves: Roman remains, Angevin and Aragonese towers, ancient churches and chapels…

Guided walks

Walks in Massa Lubrense are organized all year round: guided itineraries, outings in nature and activities related to local culture and gastronomy. For the little ones, the Merende Itineranti are an opportunity to rediscover the link with the land and the local culture.

Certified local guides

Relying on environmental hiking guides is the best way to deepen the knowledge of the territory in its naturalistic, historical and artistic aspects. Many local guides propose hiking itineraries suitable for all levels and circumstances and are available to organize tailor-made walks.

Meeting new people

By participating in an event or a group excursion you meet people with the same passion for hiking! People with whom to share a day outdoors, exchange stories of their experiences on the road, create unforgettable memories of a pleasant walk in nature.

Wide offer of accommodation and rural tourism

To enjoy a few days of hiking in Massa Lubrense, you can easily find accommodation suitable for every need. In inhabited centers or in more isolated places, the offer ranges from hotels to b&bs, campsites and holiday homes. Furthermore, the local restaurants and farmhouses offer pleasant refreshment points during or at the end of the walks.
