Trekking: 10 tips for beginners

Category:Blog,Outdoors,Pro Loco,Travel Tags :

by Angela della Ventura

Interview with Michele Palomba

Trekking is certainly one of the best sports you can practice in Massa Lubrense. It is not uncommon to find people that, although wishing to take on trekking, always postpone it, because they do not know where to start. This is exactly why we interviewed an expert in this field, Michele Palomba, who gave us 10 useful tips to help you enjoy this wonderful activity.

1. Things you should always carry

Contrary to popular belief, there is no need to carry many things, which are often bulky. You just need a few essentials, which can easily be stowed in a small backpack, as walking with both hands free will help improve balance and tackle steep trails. The essentials are:

  • a water bottle or canteen;
  • some snacks;
  • sunglasses;
  • cap or hat to protect yourself from sun rays:
  • change of dry clothes, in case you get wet due to bad weather or need to change after sweating too much (socks are utterly important);
  • warm outfit;
  • raincoat;
  • headlamp, which is particularly useful in wintertime, as the sun sets early;
  • fully charged phone;
  • small first aid kit;
  • pair of trekking poles.

2. Things to include in your first aid kit

kit pronto soccorso

First of all, it is very important to always carry any type of prescribed drug with you; if you have allergies, always include antihistamines. Never give anyone the medications you have been prescribed, especially if that person has never taken that type of medication before. This is always good practice, but it is especially important when hiking.
In the actual first aid kit, which should be stored in an airtight bag, you should include a small number of things, which can still help you treat any minor injuries you may suffer while trekking:

  • plasters of different sizes used to treat abrasions;
  • antiseptic, which must explicitly be of the type that can be used on damaged skin;
  • gauzes and medical tape;
  • Tweezers, which can help you to pull out splinters from wounds;

You may of course include other types of medical devices, but you should only do so if you’re qualified enough to use them.

3. Suitable clothing

A simple but very useful advice is to dress with layered clothing using clothes that aren’t particularly warm or heavy when worn on their own, but, at the same time, when worn layered can give you comfort while trekking.
Starting from the innermost layer, depending on season, you should either wear a t-shirt or a thermal long-sleeved shirt; continuing on, fleece clothing can always be useful to protect both from wind and unexpected cold in the shaded areas. Always depending on season, another layer can consist of either a duvet in winter or an anorak during spring or summer, which you can easily put on or take off as needed.
Speaking of fabrics, it is best to avoid denim and plush fabric, because they take a lot of time to dry out in case you get wet when crossing a brook or due to unexpected rain. Breathable fabrics, on the other hand, are highly recommended, being fresh, durable, with quick drying properties. They are suitable for any type of sport.

4. Suitable shoes

Good shoes are essential for any type of hiking, even though many underestimate their importance.
It is crucial to always wear shoes that are suitable for this kind of activity, even when walking on seemingly easy trails, because shoes will always help you walk better.
New shoes may feel hard at first, but their hardness is intentional, as it helps sustaining your body while walking; sneakers or other common types of shoes, on the other hand, are too weak and do not provide good balance, even if they might feel more comfortable at first.
Hiking shoes also feature a sculpted sole, which allows for good grip on any type of terrain.
An useful advice, especially for beginners, is to use high boots, even if they might seem useless or overly expensive; these boots are specifically designed to protect the wearer against injury, as they sustain your ankle better than low boots do, by wrapping perfectly around it.

5. How to pick a path to suit your needs

There are several ways to pick a path that will suit your needs: you can either rely on printed guides or on guides available on the internet. You can also consider asking someone who is more experienced, such as a friend, a qualified guide or the local tourist office. One should avoid relying on websites where any user can upload tracks, since you won’t be able to judge trail conditions and the amount of experience needed to take a given path. Another tip would be not to follow the crowd, avoiding to pick a path only because, according to others, it is easier or just because many people pick it.

6. How to prepare

Hiking in Massa Lubrense

Taking a basic trekking course can be really useful to become familiar with technical terms, to learn how to judge properly the type of terrain you will walk on and its elevation gain; this will in turn allow you to pick a path that, whille offering great landscapes, will still match your physical abilities. This is crucial, as it will guarantee that an otherwise wonderful experience doesn’t turn into something unpleasant.
Speaking of physical preparation, beginners can take walks to train their body to cross steep terrain, but those who cannot exercise daily could simply start using the stairs instead of the lift anytime they can.

7. How to reliably check the weather forecast

Weather is an higly discussed topic and not an easy one to cover. The plethora of smartphone apps are a good way to get an overview of the situation. On the other hand, always keep in mind that in the open air, and especially in the mountains, weather can and will change suddenly and unexpectedely. On mountain peaks it is highly likely for individual thunderstorms to occur, and this is impossible to predict.
Trekking in the rain isn’t necessarily unpleasant, though, even if it might seem scary at first; with all the necessary precautions it can be an unique and suggestive experience.

8. How to trek with children

Hiking in contact with nature is great for children too. In this case, as can be expected, one should exercise caution, especially with lively and curious children. A good tip is to prefer spring or summer time, when weather will usually be mild, but you should also pick easy, well shaded trails to avoid fatigue, injuries or heat strokes. You can turn hiking into a game, where children will feel like they are little explorers. This will surely make them prone to repeat the experience and, hopefully,  teach them to love nature and hiking

9. Where to find adventure companions

Hikes organised by qualified guides are the best way to begin if you’re alone, since you’re sure to receive good tips on choosing equipment and on picking paths. Hikes organised by local tourist offices are also very useful to get acquainted with other people experienced in trekking. Tourist hikes are often designed to provide knowledge of the area, or sometimes to explore an area: because of this they are usually easy to undertake, but exciting nonetheless.

10. Tips about blogs or hiking webpages

Blog

Michele’s webpage, “hikeandseek“, will help you to fully immerse in the world of hiking. Following local webpages based on the area you want to go for a hike in will also help: this includes the website of the municipality and that of the local tourist office. One can often find webpages specific to a certain mountain range or area: these can be relied upon to get updated information about trail conditions. Rockslides and areas with high vegetation are also usually reported.

So, as we have seen, trekking is a sport for everyone, young and old, experts or beginners, enjoyable and, above all, healthy.

Are you ready to go for a hike with us along Massa Lubrense’s best trails?

written by Serena Lobianco

Why choose to go camping in Massa Lubrense?

Camping is a form of alternative tourism that allows you to move freely among the desired destinations and is undoubtedly a solution for low-cost holidays.

Furthermore, it is possible to do it as you wish, that is alone, in the company of a partner or with friends. It is also to be considered as a convenient solution if you are traveling with your family, with children and with animals.

We often have the idea that campsites are ‘spartan spaces’ but this is not the case. In fact, the structures you can find in Massa Lubrense are well equipped and attentive to everyone’s needs.

Campeggiare a Massa Lubrense

For camping in Massa Lubrense, you can access three areas: Villaggio Nettuno, Villaggio Syrenuse and Villa Lubrense. These structures allow the stay of caravans and tents, and they accept pets.

  • Villaggio Nettuno is located in Marina del Cantone. That is a characteristic coastal village, whose gastronomic specialties are the renowned spaghetti alla Nerano. Villaggio Nettuno has a camping area for tents, caravans and campers. It is located in a shady area and has a private walkway to the beach.
  • Villaggio Syrenuse overlooks the beautiful Marina del Cantone beach and is less than 500 metres from Recommone beach. The two beaches have both received the ‘Blue Flag’. The village offers accommodation in bungalows surrounded by greenery and equipped with every comfort.
  • Villa Lubrense is located halfway between Massa Lubrense and Sorrento. It has independent bungalows, located among the olive and citrus trees of the garden. With a 10-minute walk you can reach Puolo beach from which you can admire a crystalline sea with Mount Vesuvius in the background.

The different camping options in Massa Lubrense allow you to choose the solution that best suits your needs and, most importantly, they are all ready to welcome you!

An experience of Sri Sri yoga in Massa Lubrense

Category:Outdoors,Blog,Events,Pro Loco Tags :

Edited by Claudia Pia Palumbo

Interview with Gelsomina Di Maio

Some call it sport, others religion or philosophy of life: we are talking about yoga. A practice born more than 2000 years ago in India to establish a balance between body and mind and which, during all these years, has never gone out of fashion. On the contrary, it has known more and more new forms, such as Sri Sri Yoga.

In view of the cycle of Sri Sri Yoga lessons that will be held this summer at the Annunziata castle, we asked the instructor Gelsomina di Maio for some information on Sri Sri Yoga.

Could you briefly describe what Sri Sri Yoga consists of? And above all, how does it differ from traditional yoga?

Actually, Sri Sri Yoga does not differ at all from the yogic tradition but is a faithful expression of it, indeed the SSY integrates the various traditional paths such as Hatha Yoga (effort), Jnana Yoga (wisdom), Karma Yoga (service and action) and Bakti Yoga (devotion). The founder of SSY is Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a living master, accomplished in yoga and meditation, peace ambassador, and humanitarian leader known and appreciated all over the world. The goal is to bring into the world an authentic education of yoga accessible to all. His message is that inner and outer peace is possible through service and the awakening of human values. The word yoga means “union”, the one between the body, mind, and breath.

Why is yoga called a “complete” discipline, which provides significant benefits for both the body and the mind?

Yoga is undoubtedly a very complete discipline. Numerous scientific studies demonstrate the therapeutic power of yogic practices. With yoga, we work on the body through postures or positions called “ASANA“. Through certain breathing practices “PRANAYAMA” and meditation “DHYANA“, we work on our vital energy until we reach a deep meditative state called “SAMADHI“.

The benefits of yoga are immense: On a physical level, there is an improvement in elasticity and muscle tone and in all the joints of the body. It improves blood and lymphatic circulation, gives better balance and coordination, increases breathing capacity, and helps reduce body weight. Mentally, it reduces stress, improves concentration and memory, and calms anxiety and mental agitation. Not least, it helps improve sleep quality and quality of life.

 Why precisely the Annunziata castle? Is the environment a determining factor when practicing Sri Sri Yoga?

Having the opportunity to take advantage of a place of such scenic beauty certainly enriches the yoga experience. This magnificent and harmonious place, far from the chaos of the city, where you can breathe fresh air deeply, is certainly an ideal setting for a positive and regenerating experience. The environment in which Yoga is practiced must be clean, tidy, cared for, possibly quiet and well ventilated.

Do you think SSY is for everyone? And above all, is there a specific age to start practicing SSY? Is yoga recommended for pregnant women?

On so many occasions, especially in modern times, yoga is distorted and praticed inappropriately, neglecting the most sacred and profound aspects of this millenary practice. In SSY, wisdom and techniques are proposed in an easy and joyful way, in a simple but effective way. It can therefore be within everyone’s reach and practiced at all ages. The principles of yoga can be taught from an early age, obviously, the teaching methodology and the type of practices change if we are dealing with children. Similarly in the case of pregnant women: yoga is highly recommended but you must be very careful especially in the first three months of pregnancy during which any too stimulating activity is often not recommended. During pregnancy, there are certain postures that are extremely beneficial. Proper breathing along with the well-being and deep relaxation experienced by the mother also benefits the baby in her womb.

 What advice would you give to a person who has never tried yoga until now but really wants to do it?

Not to hesitate any further and take this opportunity immediately. I would recommend giving oneself this possibility without judging themselves, without thinking a priori of being more or less capable. I would suggest experimenting and getting involved. It is never too late to make a change in one’s life and it is never too late to live fully.

We, therefore, thank the instructor Gelsomina di Maio for answering some questions, and now all that remains is to try the free lessons organized by the Pro loco of Massa Lubrense to enjoy the countless advantages that Sri Sri Yoga provides.

The panoramic points of Massa Lubrense

Category:Blog,Featured,Places,Travel Tags :

written by Serena Lobianco

The Massa Lubrense’s territory can also be admired from above, that is from the top of the mountains and from the viewpoints. The landscape wonders are many and are scattered throughout the entire country. For this reason, we have selected a classification of 5 locations from which you can admire some of the panoramic points of Massa Lubrense.

  • Annunziata’s viewpoint
    In the picturesque setting of what was once the historic center of Massa Lubrense, there is the Belvedere of the small hamlet of Annunziata. The first step is to enter the village. Once you reach the Church of the Annunciation, you have to go down a short staircase to get to the lookout. At that point, the entire gulf of Naples immediately opens up to your view, from the island of Capri to Mount Vesuvius.
  • Termini’s lookout
    Among the panoramic points of Massa Lubrense, the viewpoint of Termini is a meeting point for lovers of the island of Capri. In fact, from the square of Termini you can enjoy the panorama of the crystal clear water interrupted by the evergreen island of Capri. The island seems so close that it almost seems to be able to touch it.
  • Monastero del Deserto
    In Sant’Agata sui due golfi there is an exceptional panoramic point. In fact, along a pleasant walk along a tree-lined path you arrive at the Monastero del Deserto, on whose tower you can admire the unforgettable view of the gulfs of Naples and Salerno.
  • Monte San Costanzo
    You can reach the pinewood of Monte San Costanzo by car, or you have to take a path from Termini. Which is moderately tiring. However, this effort will be rewarded by the amazing view that the panorama reserves for us, once we arrive at the church of San Costanzo. Among the panoramic points of Massa Lubrense, this is certainly the most suggestive; because from here our gaze is not focused on a single direction but has a 360 ° view at its disposal.
  • Pennino
    The last panoramic point in our classification could only be the Pennino. From the top of the terrace, the observer can enjoy the view of the naturalistic spectacle offered by the Gulf of Naples and the island of Capri. In the twilight hours, the surrounding atmosphere is tinged with particular shades, which makes the experience romantic and evocative.

Once you have read the article, you just have to visit Massa Lubrense. By doing so, you will personally experience its panoramic spots and discover its many tourist destinations.

The coast of Massa Lubrense by kayak

Category:Blog,Places Tags :

Di Serena Lobianco

Intervista a Luca Zuddas

Massa Lubrense in kayak

Decisamente a tutti.

Massa Lubrense in kayak

Massa Lubrense in kayak

Ready for the Lemon Festival 2022

Category:Blog,Events,Festivals,Food,Pro Loco Tags :

Walkings, tastings and shows to celebrate one of the symbols of local gastronomy.

In Massa Lubrense we are preparing to host the lemon festival “Limoni in festa”, two days of good cuisine and traditions promoted by the association Pro Loco Massa Lubrense with the patronage and the city’s contribution: the appointment is for Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of July, in Largo Vescovado. Now in its 46th edition, the event returns after two years of stop imposed by the pandemic.

Limoni in Festa 2022

The traditional “agropasseggiata” will open the program, on July 9 at 9 am. It is a walk on paths and alleys of the old town, among olive and lemon groves. In the evening, at 6:30 pm, the town center will come alive with the opening of the stands of crafts and typical products and the lemon tasting itinerary.

There will be shows: on Saturday at 9 pm the actor Gino Rivieccio will propose to the public his show ‘Da cosa nasce cosa’, while on Sunday at 9 pm the musical group ‘La Maschera’ will perform in the concert  ‘Sotto chi tene core’. “We couldn’t wait to organize our festival again – observes Anna Teresa Pappalardo, president of Pro Loco Massa Lubrense – I thank all those working for its realization with renewed enthusiasm, waiting to be all together in the square”.

“The festival returns after two years of stop – emphasizes Antonino Esposito, managing director Agriculture of Massa Lubrense – with the aim of enhancing an extraordinary product such as the lemon of Massa Lubrense, the ‘femminiello’: oval, with a juicy straw-yellow pulp, a concentrate of vitamin C and mineral salts, with a skin rich in essential oils.”

The lemon festival is part of the frame of ‘Omaggio alla bellezza’, the cycle of summer events promoted by the city administration of Massa Lubrense: “With this review – concludes Giovanna Staiano, Councillor for Tourism Massa Lubrense – we have given rise to several initiatives for tourists and residents, which lead to the discovery and enhancement of our extraordinary land.”

Category:Blog,Featured,Food Tags :

Buon appetito!

10 photos that will make you want to visit Massa Lubrense

Category:Blog,Places,Travel Tags :

written by Serena Lobianco

Italy is among the countries that boast a great naturalistic heritage and it is not surprising that it is one of the most popular destinations for travelers. Undoubtedly, Massa Lubrense is one of its natural wonders there is, rich in coastal and hilly landscapes.

Precisely for this reason, we have selected 10 photos taken by the Instagram community that show one of the most beautiful Italian locations.

Congratulations to the photographers, professionals and amateurs, who inspired our selection!

Regardless of the view, the protagonist of Monte San Costanzo is certainly the white church, pictured here from above. Therefore, from the top of the hill you can admire a 360degree view of the Lattari Mountains and the gulfs of Naples and Salerno that embrace the coast.

Firstly from the top of Monte di San Costanzo, we overlook the Bay of Ieranto, an enchanting rocky inlet. Moreover if you take a look from a precise perspective, the bay forms the suggestive shape of a heart.

The Bay of Ieranto is a property protected by the FAI (Italian Environment Fund) and can be reached on foot by a marked path. Starting from Nerano, the journey takes about 40 minutes. Alternatively, the bay can be reached directly from the sea, but only by using a canoe.

This is a photo of Marina del Cantone taken from above. It shows the beauty of the crystalline sea of the Lubrense coast. In the background, you can see the gulf of Salerno, up to Punta Licosa.

In the image above, in the foreground, there is the Montalto Tower. This was completed in 1570 and placed in a strategic position to guard the coast. From the top of it you can admire the Bay of Ieranto and the Bay of Marina del Cantone.

This shot portrays the Recommone Bay. This small pebble beach can be reached on foot along a short path, departing from Marina del Cantone.

In the previous photo, there is a shot of Crapolla. It is a natural inlet, reachable by going down 700 steps.

Marina di Puolo is located at the very beginning of the town of Massa Lubrense, coming from Sorrento. In summer, some of the local restaurants have their tables directly on the beach, giving customers a unique experience.

In this photo we can see the Marciano bridge, it is fascinating because it’s one of the most panoramic points of Massa Lubrense. In particular, walking on it you can admire the island of Capri in the Gulf of Naples.

In conclusion, in this last photo, there is part of the Sirenuse path, which is a trekking path between Sant’Agata sui due Golfi and Colli di Fontanelle. It is called this way because during the walk you can see in the background the islets of Li Galli, also called Sirenuse.

These are just some of the many places to explore in Massa Lubrense. However, if you are interested in learning about new destinations, we recommend that you consult our blog or follow our Instagram page to discover them!

Hiking for children: “Merende Itineranti” by Lucia Sessa

Category:Blog,Featured,Outdoors,Travel Tags :

written by Miriam Russo

Hiking is a very common activity nowadays. It is based on walks along paths surrounded by nature – usually on mountains. The aim is to explore and discover the territory, so as to see and live it even closer.
Not only is this kind of excursion widespread in Massa Lubrense area, but it is also expanded thanks to projects and events for adults and children. Especially the latter can get in touch with this exciting activity and, at the same time, get to know the territory. For that matter, one of the luckiest projects is “Merende Itineranti“, conceived by Lucia Sessa for the Pro Loco Massa Lubrense, to whom we asked some questions to find out more about hiking for children.

What is hiking and why is it the ideal activity for everyone

Hiking is generally the activity of walking, which differs from trekking in terms of times and duration: while trekking (which is also very popular in Massa Lubrense) includes excursions of several days, hiking takes place in one day only. Furthermore, hiking has its main focus on the movement, therefore it is mostly experienced as a sporting activity. Extending it to children, it allows them too to walk and move and to discover the territory at the same time.
It is ideal for everyone because – thanks to its short duration – it allows the little ones too to move without making too much effort. Moreover, as Lucia Sessa has highlighted, it helps to regain good breathing, which has great and positive consequences on both physical and psychological walkers’ condition.

Children group of Merende Itineranti

Hiking rules for kids

Although it is an activity that makes one free, hiking has its own rules too. They are based mostly on respect towards the surrounding nature and other people. For this reason, children are told to be silent during the walks and/or to stop at some points. This allows them to respect the common pace and to take time to breathe and observe what is around them, too. Another important rule is to follow and listen to the guide who describes interesting details along the road and points out any dangers.

Kids from the Merende Itineranti project walking and discovering

“Merende Itineranti” project

It’s a project born with the aim to create activities specifically for children during summertime. From the beginning, there was a double purpose: physical activity on one hand and discovery of the territory on the other. Over time, thanks to the positive feedback gained, Lucia Sessa and her team were able to diversify their excursion plans. They chose even longer paths which led them to farmhouses where kids were able to be in touch with animals and even learn about the local dairy production. At the very basis of the project, there is always the aim to get children involved, in fact, they carry out different tasks. In some experiences, for example, they have been able to discover particular locations and to see closely how the old crafts are still done nowadays.
Moreover, when it is time to have a snack, children are offered local biological products, with the purpose of taking care of nutrition too, which is another fundamental rule of hiking.

The first reaction to the project was undoubtedly positive and proactive: the children saw in the “Merende” an opportunity for sharing and a way to be together at the end of school. At the same time, their parents too found pleasure in learning about characteristics and features of the place that – in the habit of everyday life – they didn’t even notice. Over time, this has led to a growing will of participation which has made the project successful.

Age ranges for hiking for children

Hiking really is an activity within everyone’s reach. In fact, the children who participate to the “Merende Itineranti” project are aged from 5 years upwards. In cases of more difficult itineraries, the age group can change, but basically, it is an activity suitable for all ages. There is a careful selection of the paths based on the ideal of maximum inclusiveness. For this reason, the routes proposed are accessible also to participants with disabilities, giving them the opportunity to join the project and benefit from both the hiking and the discovery of the territory. In fact, hiking in the area is practiced by involving all the fractions of Massa Lubrense. Therefore, excursions are organized so as to reach different areas of the place in order to create more collectivity and learning opportunities.

Hiking for children: group of adults and kids walking

All these characteristics – and the way Lucia Sessa and the “Merende Itineranti” project carried out the hiking for children activity – make it something unique that everyone, adults and children, should try. Our invitation and advice are to experience what it really means to immerse yourself in nature, to discover and know more about the territory of Massa Lubrense as well as yourself.

Category:Blog,Travel Tags :

5. Souvenir a tema limone
